Does Medicare Cover Prescription Lenses, Glasses, or Sunglasses

The original Medicare Part A and Part B will not help pay for any prescription sunglasses, contact lenses or eyeglasses.

However, eyeglasses or other corrective lenses can be covered if they are deemed as medically necessary. For example, lenses or glasses required after a cataract surgery.

Prescription Sunglasses and Medicare Advantage Plan.

The Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) may offer vision coverage including eyeglasses, contact lenses and prescription sunglasses. Part C may also provide coverage for vision benefits such as routine eye exams.

While considering these coverages it’s important to keep in mind that each Medicare plan is different and the coverages vary. Therefore, we suggest you consult a licensed insurance agent that specializes in Medicare insurance to help you choose a Medicare plan with coverage that fits your individual situation.

Corrective Lenses and Medicare Part B

The original Medicare Part B will pay for corrective lenses under one condition. If you have to get a cataract surgery to implant an intraocular lens, then the Medicare Part B will help pay for the corrective lens that is required.

The Medicare Part B will provide coverage for one pair of eyeglasses with standard frames or a single set of contact lenses. In this case, you will have to pay 20% of the Medicare approved amount for the lenses after surgery. Please keep in mind the Part B deductible will also apply.

Many Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) cover routine eye exams and an allowance for lenses, frames or contact lenses. Coverage for lenses and glasses varies from one plan to the other, therefore it’s important that you consider your eye health needs carefully before making a decision on Medicare plans.
